今週分 노래를 紹介합니다.
[The Sound of Silence]
이 노래는 Paul Simon(“PS”, 1941~alive)이 作詞/曲했고 Simon & Garfunkel이 1964년에 發表했읍니다. 이 노래는 melody가 아름답기에 귀에 쉽게 들려오지만 노랫말은 깊은 뜻이 담겨 있읍니다. Wikipedia에 따르면 PS가 이 노래를 1962년(21歲)에 作曲을 했다고 합니다. 이런 어린 나이에 이 程度의 깊이가 있는 노래가 쓰여졌다는 것이 놀랍습니다. Garfunkel에 따르면 이 노래는 "感性的으로 相互間 疏通(소통) 不能의, 卽 서로 사랑을 할 수 없는” 現代人들을 表現한 것이라고 합니다.

(幻視의) 씨앗을 (나에게) 뿌려놓고 갔기 때문에

내 “腦(or 머리)” 속에 심어진 그 幻視는
Still remains within the [sound of silence]*1
沈默의 소리 안에 지금도 남아있네

불안한 꿈들 속에서 난 홀로 걸었네
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
街路燈 “불빛(or 光輪)” 아래의 좁은 자갈길(을)
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed
By the flash of a neon light That [split the night]*2
And touched the sound of silence
밤거리 (風景)을 (明暗으로) 갈라놓고 沈默의 소리에 닿은
네온 불빛에 내 “두 눈(or 兩眼)”이 찔렸을 때
나는 차갑고 축축한 (바깥) 空氣 때문에 옷깃을 세웠네
And in the [naked light]*3 I saw
알電球 불빛 속에서 난 보았네
Ten thousand people, maybe more
萬名의 사람들, 아마 더 많았을지도 (모르겠네)
People talking without speaking
核心을 말하지 않고 떠드는 사람들
People hearing without listening
傾聽하지 않고 흘려 듣는 사람들
People writing songs
That voices never share
“人聲들이 絶對로 共有하지 않는(or 사람들이 他人들과
絶對로 함께 부르지 않는)” 노래들을 만드는 사람들
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
누구도 敢히
沈默의 소리를 妨害하지 못하네
"Fools" said I,
“바보들”이라고 난 말했네
"you do not know Silence like a cancer grows
“당신들은 癌처럼 커지는 沈默을 모르네요
Hear my words that I might teach you
당신들에게 가르침이 될 수도 있는 내 말을 들어보세요
Take my arms that I might reach you“
당신들에게 닿을지도 모르는 내 “두 팔(or 兩팔)”을 잡아요“
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
하지만 내 말은 소리 없는 빗방울처럼 (땅에) 떨어졌고
沈默의 우물들 속에서 울려 퍼졌네
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
그리고 사람들은 自身들이 만든
“네온神”에게 머리를 숙이고 빌었고
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that [it was forming]*4
네온 사인은 “自身(卽, 네온 사인)”이 만들어
내고 있는 字幕들 속에 있는 警句를 번쩍거렸고
And the sign said*5
네온 사인은 말했네
"The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls“
“豫言者들의 말씀들은
地下鐵 壁面과
“共同住宅(or 아파트)” 玄關에 쓰여 있도다“
And whispered in the sound of silence
그리고 (豫言者들의 말씀들은) 沈默의 소리로써 속삭였었네

*1. 沈默에 소리가 날 수 없지만 詩的/哲學的 表現으로서 이런 表現은 莊子에서도 나옵니다. (卽, 無爲之爲 or 無用之用), *2. neon sign에 불이 들어오면 周圍가 밝게 되고 불이 꺼지면 어둡게 되는 狀況을 to split the night 으로 表現한 것 같습니다, *3. 갓(shade)을 씌우지 않은 電球 또는 電燈, *4. neon sign에 字幕이 옆으로 움직이며 나오는 것을 to form 으로 表現, *5. neon sign에 字幕이 表示된 것을 to say로 表現
