이 聖歌는 黑人靈歌입니다. 1899년 Old Plantation Hymns라는 讚頌歌集에 最初로 收錄되어 있었다고 합니다. 아시겠지만 plantation은 大規模 農場으로서 雪糖, 커피 또는 고무等을 栽培하는데 當然히 많은 勞動力이 必要하였기에 옛날 美國 plantation에서 많은 黑人들이 고된 일을 하며 慰安으로서 불렀던 노래들이 黑人靈歌입니다. 오늘은 Jessye Norman (soprano, 1945~now) 및 Robert Shaw Chorale (1948~1965)이 부른 2曲을 보내드립니다. 그리고 이 聖歌는 改新敎(147장)讚頌歌集 및 가톨릭(489번) 聖歌集에도 收錄되어 있읍니다.
