[논어NTE] 02-20_爲政_季康子問_2020.10.19

 

季康子問: 使民敬忠以勸, 如之何？子曰：臨之以莊，則敬；孝慈，則忠；舉善而教不能，則勸。

계강자문: 사민경충이권, 여지하? 자왈: 임지이장, 즉경; 효자, 즉충; 거선이교불능, 즉권.

季康子问：“使民敬、忠以劝，如之何？”子曰：“临之以庄，则敬；孝慈，则忠；举善而教不能，则劝。”

季康子가 (孔子에게) 물었다: ‘百姓(or 平民)’들로 하여금 (政治家에게) 尊敬과 忠誠 그리고 勤勉하게 만들려면 어떻게 해야 할까요？孔子曰：(政治家가 百姓들을) ‘莊嚴(or 嚴肅)’함으로써 統治한다면 (政治家를) 尊敬할 것이며；孝行 및 慈悲心으로써 (統治한다면) (政治家에게) 忠誠을 할 것이며；’훌륭한 技術者(or 有德者)’를 뽑아 ‘技術이 없는 사람(or 無德者)’을 가르치게 한다면 (百姓들은) 勤勉하게 될 것입니다.

 

英譯;

Ji Kang asked how to cause the people to revere their ruler, to be faithful to him, and to go on to nerve themselves to virtue. The Master said, "Let him preside over them with gravity; then they will revere him. Let him be filial-pious and kind to all; then they will be faithful to him. Let him advance the good and teach the incompetent; then they will eagerly seek to be virtuous."
