或謂孔子曰：子奚不為政？子曰：書云，『孝乎惟孝，友于兄弟。』施於有政，是亦為政，奚其為為政？

혹위공자왈: 자해불위정? 자왈: 서운, 효호유효, 우우형제 시어유정, 시역위정, 해기위위정?

或谓孔子曰：“子奚不为政？”子曰：“《书》云：‘孝乎惟孝，友于兄弟。’施于有政，是亦为政，奚其为为 政？”

어떤 사람이 孔子에게 물었다: 스승님은 왜 政治를 하지 않습니까? 孔子曰: 尙書에 ‘孝道를 하라, 오로지 孝道를 하라 그리고 兄弟間에는 友愛가 있어라’라는 말이 있다. (이런 것들이) 政治에 施行된다면 그것 亦是 政治가 되는 것인데 어째서 現實 政治만이 政治를 하는 것이 되리오?

Someone asked Confucius, ”Why are you not in public office?” Confucius said: The Book says, ‘Be good to your parents and be friendly among brothers’, the realization of which is as to be in public office. What need is there to be in public office?
