祭如在。祭神如神在。子曰。吾不與。祭如不祭。

제여재. 제신여신재. 자왈. 오불여. 제여부제.

祭如在，祭神如神在。子曰：“吾不与祭，如不祭。”

 

飜譯 by sjc;

(先祖가) 實在하신 것처럼 (先祖의) 祭祀를 모셔라。神靈이 實在하신 것처럼 神靈의 祭祀를 모셔라。子曰。내가 (積極的으로 祭祀에) 參與하지 않으면 (내가) 祭祀를 모신다 해도 (나는) 祭祀를 모시지 않는 것과 같다.

 

英譯;

In an ancestral offering, their presence should be felt. In sacrificial offerings to the gods, the gods’ presence should be felt. Confucius said, “It is as if I had not made the offerings if I don’t feel their presence”
