論語: 里仁 04-18

 

子曰。事父母幾諫。見志不從。又敬不違。勞而不怨。

자왈. 사부모기간. 견지부종. 우경불위. 노이불원.

子曰：“事父母几谏，见志不从，又敬不违，劳而不怨。”

 

飜譯 by sjc;

子曰。父母님을 섬김에 있어서 (子息은 父母님의 잘못을) 가볍게 말씀 드려라。(父母님께서 諫言받으신 것을) 따르려 하지 않으시려는 ‘뜻 (or 氣分)’을 보거든 恭遜히 服從하라。(또 그 諫言 때문에 父母님에게) ‘괴로움을 當해도 (or 야단을 맞아도)’ 怨望하지 마라。

 

英譯;

The Master said, "In serving his parents, a son may remonstrate with them, but gently; even if he sees that they do not incline to follow his advice, he shows an increased degree of reverence just the same; and even if they punish him, he should not allow himself to murmur."
