論語: 公冶長 05-10

 

宰予晝寢。子曰。朽木不可雕也。糞土之牆。不可杇也。於予與何誅。子曰。始吾於人也。聽其言而信其行。今吾於人也。聽其言而觀其行。於予與改是。

재여주침. 자왈. 후목불가조야. 분토지장. 불가오야. 어여여하주. 자왈. 시오어인야. 청기언이신기행. 금오어인야. 청기언이관기행. 어여여개시.

宰予昼寝，子曰：“朽木不可雕也，粪土之墙不可杇也，于予与何诛！”子曰：“始吾于人也，听其言而信其行；今吾于人也，听其言而观其行。于予与改是。”

 

飜譯 by sjc;

宰予가 낮에 잠을 잤다。孔子曰。썩은 나무에는 彫刻을 할 수 없다。더러운 흙담장에는 덧칠을 할 수 없다。宰予에 對하여 무엇을 나무랄까?。孔子曰。처음에 나는 사람에 對하여 그 사람의 말을 들으면 그 사람의 行動을 믿었다。(그러나) 지금의 나의 對人法은 사람 말을 들으면 그 사람의 行動을 觀察하는 것이다。宰予 때문에 (나의 以前 對人 判斷法을) 고쳤다。

 

英譯;

Zai Yu being asleep during the daytime, the Master said, "Rotten wood cannot be carved; a wall of dirty earth will not receive the trowel. This Yu! - what is the use of my reproving him?" The Master said, "At first, my way with men was to hear their words, and give them credit for their conduct. Now my way is to hear their words, and look at their conduct. It is from Yu that I have learned to make this change."
