或曰。雍也仁而不佞。子曰。焉用佞。禦人以口給。屢憎於人。不知其仁。焉用佞。

혹왈. 옹야인이불녕. 자왈. 언용녕. 어인이구급. 누증어인. 부지기인. 언용녕.

或曰：“雍也仁而不佞。”子曰：“焉用佞？御人以口给，屡憎于人，不知其仁。焉用佞？”

 

飜譯 by sjc;

어떤 사람이 말했다。”雍은 仁德은 있으되 達辯은 아니군요”。孔子曰。”어찌 達辯이란 말을 쓰시오? ‘말을 많이 함으로써(or 達辯으로써)’ 다른 사람들의 말을 막아내면 사람들에게 종종　미움을 삽니다。雍에게 仁德이 있는지 없는지는 모르나 (그렇다고) 어찌 達辯이란 말을 쓰시오?。”

 

英譯;

Someone said, "Yong is truly virtuous, but he is not ready with his tongue." The Master said, "What is the good of being ready with the tongue? They who encounter men with smartness of speech for the most part procure themselves hatred. I know not whether he be truly virtuous, but why should he show readiness of the tongue?"
