今週分 노래를 紹介합니다.

 

[Here comes that rainbow again]

이 노래는 2003년 Kris KRISTOFFERSON (“KK”, 1936~alive)가 發表했으며 作詞/曲도 KK가 했읍니다. 이 노래의 作曲 motif는 小說 “憤怒의 葡萄” (The wrath of grapes by John STEINBECK)에서 따왔다고 합니다. 이 小說의 줄거리는 1930年代 經濟 大恐慌 때 많은 中産層의 美國人들이 小作農으로 轉落하여 希望을 찾아 美國 西部地域인 California로 갔지만 거기서도 挫折을 맛본다는 內容입니다. 한편 KK는 大學 때 Rhodes scholarship을 받아서 Oxford에서 英文學 공부를 했으며 나중에 美國 陸軍士官學校인 West Point에서 英文學 敎授職을 提案 받았으나 Nashville에서 作曲家로 活動하기 위하여 그 提案을 拒絶했다고 합니다. 한편, KK의 많은 노래들이 思索的인 內容에 듣기 便安한 folk music style로 作曲되어 있읍니다.

The scene was a small roadside cafe,

場面은 작은 路邊 카페 였었고

The waitress was sweeping the floor,

女子 從業員이 바닥을 쓸고 있었네

Two truck-drivers drinking their coffee

트럭 運轉手 둘이 커피를 마시고 있었고

And two Okie kids by the door.

카페 內門 옆에서는 Oklahoma 아이 둘이 있었네

"How much are them candies?" they asked her.

“이 캔디들은 얼마지” 運轉手들이 女子 從業員에게 물었더니

"How much have you got?" she replied.

“얼마를 가지고 있나요” 라고 그녀가 對答했네

"We've only a penny* between us."

“우리가 가진 것은 모두 합쳐서 1 penny 뿐 인데”

"Them's two for a penny," she lied.

“그 캔디 2개는 1 penny 예요” 라고 그녀가 거짓答을 했고

And the daylight grew heavy with thunder

햇빛은 천둥으로 “무거워져 갔고 (or 어두워져 갔고)”

And the smell of the rain on the wind.

빗방울 냄새가 바람에 실려 왔네

Ain't it just like a human?

이런 場面은 “人間답지 않은가 (or 우리네 삶 같지 않은가)”?

Here comes that rainbow again.

저 무지개가 또 다시 뜨네

One truck driver called to the waitress

트럭 運轉手 1名이 從業員을 불렀네

After the kids went outside,

아이들이 밖으로 나간 뒤

"Them candies ain't two for a penny."

“그 캔디들은 1 penny 에 2개가 아닌데”

"So what's it to you," she replied.

“그게 당신과 무슨 相關이 있나요?”그녀가 對答했네

In silence they finished their coffee,

말 없이 그 運轉手들은 커피를 다 마셨고

Got up and nodded goodbye.

자리에서 일어나 가볍게 作別 人事를 했네

She called, "Hey, you left too much money."

그녀가 불렀네 “잠깐만요, 당신들은 돈을 너무 많이 냈어요”

"So what's it to you?" they replied.

“그게 당신과 무슨 相關이 있나?” 그들이 對答했네

햇빛은 천둥으로 “무거웠고 (or 어두웠고)”

And the smell of the rain on the wind.

빗방울 냄새가 바람에 실려 왔네

Ain't it just like a human?
