아름다운 멜로디에 실려있는 슬픈 이 노래는 戰爭에서 두 아들을 잃고 生活苦에 시달리는 老人의 이야기입니다. 參考로 이 노래의 背景은 濠洲입니다.

거의 60년 동안 나는 農夫였었네

Of droughts and fires and floods I've lived through plenty

많은 가뭄, ‘불길(or 火災)’과 洪水를 나는 겪어왔네

This country's dust and mud have seen my tears and blood

이 나라의 먼지와 진흙은 내 눈물과 피를 줄곧 보고 있었네

But it's nearly over now, and now I'm easy 

하지만 모두 지난 일들이라 지금 나는 便安하네

I married a fine girl when I was twenty

나는 20살 때 예쁜 處女와 結婚을 했었네

But she died in giving birth when she was thirty

하지만 그녀는 30살 때 애기를 낳다가 世上을 떠났네

No flying doctor then, just a gentle old [black gin]*2

그때는 의사를 비행기로 부를 수 없어 

溫順한 黑人 老婆만 내 곁에 있었네

But it's nearly over now, and now I'm easy

하지만 모두 지난 일들이라 지금 나는 便安하네

She left me with two sons and a daughter

On a bone-dry farm whose soil cried out for water

땅이 물을 渴求(갈구)하는 바싹 마른 農場에서

그녀는 두 아들과 딸 하나를 나에게 남기고 떠났네

So my care was rough and ready, but they grew up fine and steady

그래서 내 보살핌은 거칠었지만 그 녀석들은 잘 자랐네

But it's nearly over now, and now I'm easy

하지만 모두 지난 일들이라 지금 나는 便安하네

My daughter married young, and went her own way

내 딸은 어려서 結婚하여 나가 산다네

My sons lie buried by the [Burma Railway]*3

내 아들들은 [버어마 鐵道]*3 옆에서 묻혀있네

So on this land I've made me home, I've carried on alone

그래서 나는 이 땅에서 집을 짓고 나홀로 살아가네

But it's nearly over now, and now I'm easy

하지만 모두 지난 일들이라 지금 나는 便安하네

City folks these days despise the cockie

都市 사람들은 요즘 農夫를 蔑視(멸시)하네

Say with subsidies and dole, we've had it easy

補助金과 失業手當으로 우리가 便安하게 살아간다고 말하네

But there's no drought or starving stock on a sewered suburban block

하지만 下水道施設이 잘 되어있는 郊外住宅地에는 가뭄과 굶어 죽는 家畜은 없다네
