가난 때문에 鑛夫일을 해야만 했던 한 少年의 이야기가 이 노래 속에 感動的으로 펼쳐지고 있읍니다. 이러한 逆境을 克服하는 이야기는 職種은 다르지만 오늘날에도 綿綿히 이어지고 있다고 생각합니다.

저 아래 炭鑛(탄광) 坑道(갱도)에서 作業하네

And I swear to God if I ever see the sun

그리고 하느님께 盟誓(맹세)하건대 내가 정말로 太陽을 보거나

Or for any length of time

暫時(잠시)라도

I can hold it in my mind

내 머리 속에 ‘그것(or 太陽)’을 가질 수 있다면

I never again will go down under ground

나는 絶對로 다시 저 아래 石炭 坑道(갱도)로 내려가지 않으리

At the age of sixteen years

16살 때

Oh he quarrels with his peers

오 그는 同僚(동료)들과 다투네

Who vowed they'd never see another one In the dark recess of the mines

또 다른 勞動者가 炭鑛의 ‘暗地(or 어둡고 후미진 곳)’들에서 作業하는 것을 絶對로 보지 않겠다고 宣言한 同僚들과 다투네

Where you age before your time

그곳에서 당신은 당신의 나이보다 더 늙게 되고

And the coal dust lies heavy on your lungs

石炭가루가 당신의 肺(폐) 속에 무겁게 싸인다네

저 아래 炭鑛(탄광) 坑道(갱도)에서 作業하네

그리고 하느님께 盟誓(맹세)하건대 내가 정말로 太陽을 보거나

Through the dark recess of the mines

And he'll tell you of the hardships that were had
