八佾 03-07;

子曰。君子無所爭。必也射乎。揖讓而升下。而飮。其爭也君子。

자왈. 군자무소쟁. 필야사호. 읍양이승하. 이음. 기쟁야군자.

子曰：“君子无所争，必也射乎！ 揖让而升，下而饮，其争也君子。”

 

飜譯 by sjc;

子曰。君子는 他人과의 다툼이 없다。(그러나) 반드시 다투는 경우라면 (例外的으로)‘활쏘기’이다。(그러나 그 경우에도) 揖禮로써 서로 讓步하며

 

(a) ‘활터(卽,弓射場)’로 오르내렸다。 그리고 나서 함께 술을 마셨다。

(b) ‘활터(卽,弓射場)’로 올랐으며 ‘활터(卽,弓射場)’에서 내려와서는 함께 술을 마셨다。

 

그런 다툼이야말로 君子답다。

 

英譯;

Gentlemen do not compete, even in archery. With both hands clasped, each gives way to the other

 

(a)        in ascending to and descending from an archery field. Thereafter, they drink to each other.

(b)        in ascending to an archery field. Having descended from it, they drink to each other.

 

Their competition is gentlemanly.

 

構文 分析 by sjc;

子(=孔子)曰(to say)。君子(a man of virtue 또는 a gentleman)無(not to have)所(what)爭(to quarrel)。必(to definitely do)也(=語助詞)射(an archery)乎(=語助詞)。揖(to bow with hands clasped)讓(to give way)而(and)

 

(a) 升(to ascend)下(to descend)。而(and)飮(to drink)。

(b) 升(to ascend)。下(to descend) 而(and)飮(to drink)。

 

其(this)爭(quarrel)也(=語助詞)君子(a man of virtue 또는 a gentleman)。
